The Physician Extender model has been developed as an innovative approach to allow practices to expand their practice to accommodate more of a patient base and possibly provide a larger scope of services to enhance this growth.
Practices that employ midlevel providers (Nurse Practitioners and/or Physician Assistants) have seen the benefits these practitioners bring to a practice. The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners states, “NPs are proven to be excellent healthcare providers. More than 40 years of research has established that NPs provide high-quality, cost-effective and personalized care. When NP care is compared with that of other providers, NP patients are more satisfied with their care and say that, in addition to providing excellent healthcare, their NP excels in giving health advice. They are expert at assessing and diagnosing problems. The treatments they prescribe result in positive outcomes.”
Having established this benchmark for care, NP’s have become readily accepted by patients and physician partners in today’s Family Practice Marketplace.
So, how does PPS come into the picture? Because of the economics of operating a practice today, there is often a desire to expand a practice without the resources to make this happen.
PPS will recruit, screen, and hire midlevel providers under a partnership agreement with your practice. PPS will support the salary and benefits for the midlevel which allows the practice a ‘window of opportunity’ in which to increase their revenue stream by increasing the number of patient encounters per day. Current, aggressive PPS practices have been able to dramatically increase the number of patient visits by adding the midlevel provider while maintaining quality of care.
PPS will work together with practice managers to track and report the additional revenues to the practice. While the Extender is fully integrated into your practice as one of your staff under your clinical guidance, all human resource management is done by PPS. This has proven to create a more symbiotic relationship between the physician and the extender since the ‘business’ of the employment is handled outside their relationship. Bottom line- it allows the practitioners to focus on the practice of medicine.
